Eduard Löwen: A familiar face and an all-rounder

First Team 08.01.2020, 11:54

After an attempt by FCA to sign him in the summer, a deal that brings the 22-year-old Eduard Löwen to the WWK ARENA has been agreed. Hertha BSC’s new signing broke through the ranks at 1. FC Nürnberg where he demonstrated his great flexibility, amongst other things.

Eduard Löwen has actually played in every position on the pitch apart from in between the sticks, doing stints as a full-back, center-back, central midfielder, winger and even as a striker. In the early days after breaking through at Nürnberg, he was able to demonstrate his aptitude in all of these positions, but over time he eventually settled into the central midfield role he prefers to play in today, one where he can play in the number six, eight or ten roles.

He made his breakthrough into the first team in spring 2017 after joining Nürnberg from his youth career at 1. FC. Kaiserslautern and 1. FC Saarbrücken. In 2018 he and the rest of the club celebrated getting promoted to the Bundesliga. FCA fans may still have painful memories of Löwen’s time at Nürnberg from the club’s 3-0 loss to the promoted side in March of last year, as the young midfielder capped off a good performance with a goal in injury time against his new side.

Löwen already knows Richter and Uduokhai

While Nürnberg would get relegated after one season in the top-flight, Löwen remained a top-flight level player, and moved to Hertha BSC in the summer. In the capital, the German-Russian made only seven appearances in the first half of the season due to knee problems. Now the powerful all-rounder has moved to Augsburg for one-and-a-half years and FCA have the option to make the loan permanent.

Löwen has made 29 appearances in the top flight, scoring three goals, but he has also played 43 times in the second division, scoring five times. He already knows Marco Richter and Felix Uduokhai from the Germany U21 squad, with whom he has played seven games so far. Like both the current FCA players, Löwen was part of the squad that finished 2nd in the U21 European Championship in the summer. In Augsburg, where the three compatriots will meet again, Löwen will wear the number 29 shirt.
