DFL schedules the first six matchdays

Cagliari to visit Augsburg for a friendly

First Team 07.07.2021, 13:07

The DFL announced the dates and times for the first six matchdays on Wednesday. FCA’s first five league games will all take place on a Saturday afternoon.

FC Augsburg’s 11th Bundesliga season will begin with a home game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday, 14th August at 15:30 CEST. That is followed by the first away trip, as the Fuggerstädter will face Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday 21st August (15:30 CEST). A week later, FCA will host Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the WWK Arena (Saturday, 28th August, 15:30 CEST).

After the two-week international break, Markus Weinzierl’s team will travel to the capital to take on 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday, 11th September (15:30 CEST). The final two games scheduled are at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach (Saturday, 18th September, 15:30 CEST) and away on a Sunday evening in Freiburg (26th September, 17:30 CEST).

Friendly against Cagliari

Augsburg’s pre-season will conclude with a friendly at the WWK Arena against Italian side Cagliari, who finished 16th last season in Serie A (Saturday, 31st July, 15:30 CEST). Former FCA player Ragnar Klavan was recently contracted to them, although he returned to his native Estonia this summer.

This fixture will not just act as a test before the new season, but also help to prepare the possible return of fans.

“After the statement from the government on supporters being allowed to return, we can potentially start planning for this. We are in regular contact with the local authorities on how many people would be allowed in the WWK Arena, and we’re developing a concept that will help protect the fans’ health,” said Michael Ströll, FCA CEO.

As soon as more information is known on supporters being allowed to return, FCA will inform their fans. One thing is for sure: there will be no events put on alongside the friendly, unlike the usual programme in previous years.
