Baum: “We need clarity in the way we play”
FCA host Heidenheim
FC Augsburg welcome 1. FC Heidenheim to the WWK ARENA on Sunday afternoon (15:30 CET) – aiming to take all three points at home and get their revenge for the 2-1 defeat in the reverse fixture.
FCA were beaten 2-0 in Mainz last time out and felt hard done by after a contentious refereeing decision, but that’s all in the past now and the team’s focus is on their next task. “Against Heidenheim, we need to find the right balance between slightly nervous, looking forward to the match and staying fully concentrated,” head coach Manuel Baum said ahead of matchday 22.
Augsburg are unbeaten in their last six home games and will be looking to keep that run going against FCH. Heidenheim come to Augsburg with 13 points to their name and are currently six points adrift of the relegation play-off place occupied by Werder Bremen. Baum still warned against complacency: “I’ve watched a lot of Heidenheim’s games and many of them have been very tight. The coaching staff there manage to give the team the belief and fighting spirit they need.”
Baum is certain on what will be decisive: “We need clarity in the way we play. The key is to make life difficult for Heidenheim in the areas where they’re strong – and they do have their strengths.”
Potential debut for Ogundu
There is mostly positive news on the personnel front. “Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Chrislain Matsima are still unavailable. Apart from that, we have a full group to choose from,” Baum noted. Winter signing Uchenna Ogundu is also an option for the first time, while Yannik Keitel and Dimitris Giannoulis are close to returning to the matchday squad.
