Baum: We didn’t reward ourselves for a good performance

First Team 10.11.2018, 23:44
In a match shaped by tactics, FC Augsburg fell to a late 2-1 defeat away at TSG Hoffenheim. Although Alfred Finnbogason was able to cancel out Andrej Kramaric’s opener, Reiss Nelson struck with seven minutes to go to give the hosts all three points. “It is extremely disappointing that we didn’t reward ourselves for a good performance today,” summarised FCA head coach Manuel Baum. Here is the post match reaction from the players and coaches. Daniel Baier: “We lost today but we really shouldn’t have come away empty handed. We were fully in the match and created some good chances in the second half. However, we were unable to keep a clean sheet and we made mistakes that led to Hoffenheim goals. At full-time, we were on the losing side. We are disappointed as we only have ourselves to blame.” Alfred Finnbogason, who equalised for FCA: “There was more in the match today. We didn’t make the most of the chances we created against good opponents. We should have scored a couple more goals on the counter attack to turn the match in our favour. We haven’t been able to secure points after good performance on multiple occasions now this season. We would prefer to play poorly but still take something from the match.” Philipp Max: “Not rewarding ourselves for a strong performance seems to be a common theme running through the season so far. We showed good moral to get back into the match after falling behind. However, we made too many small mistakes. We were punished for them.” Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Hoffenheim have a lot of quality in their team. We defended well for most of the match but unfortunately didn’t take all of the chances we created. In hindsight, we would’ve been satisfied with a point after falling behind. During the match, I had the feeling we could’ve won the match.” FCA head coach Manuel Baum: “It is extremely disappointing that we didn’t reward ourselves for a good performance today. I am irritated because we were too hectic in our play when we won and lost possession. We also didn’t take all our chances in front of goal and we didn’t defend brilliantly for the full 90 minutes. We have to take these things on board and work on them.” Hoffenheim head coach Julian Nagelsmann: “The first half was shaped by tactics as each team created two decent chances to score. After half-time, we felt we took too many risks but got lucky when we took the lead. At that point, it was Augsburg who were creating chances to score. We also then conceded from what was simply not a dangerous situation. In my opinion our victory today wasn’t undeserved but we didn’t dominate the match.”
