Baum: “We always believed in ourselves”

First Team 31.10.2018, 02:53
FC Augsburg were on the winning side of a real cup fight on Tuesday night. “We never gave up and always looked to play football,” said head coach Manuel Baum after the game. We gathered the FCA camp’s reaction to reaching the last 16. Martin Hinteregger: “We had a good grip on the game by the end, but that wasn’t always the case, particularly early on. We’re into the next round, but Mainz caused us some problems that we’ll certainly need to analyse.” Michael Gregoritsch: “It was an even and very open game, but we’ve ended up with our noses in front. We played the better football though and ultimately deserved to win.” Philipp Max: “I always had the feeling that we were on top, even though we were behind. We were giving Mainz too much space at times, but we always believed that we would turn the game around. We really want to make an impact in the cup this season and so it feels good to have come from behind twice and then get the win too.” Caiuby: “I’m delighted to have scored the winner. It’s never your typical game when it comes to the cup, and we really showed our desire to reach the next round. We proved that we’re capable of coming from behind to win.” Manuel Baum: “I don’t really know where to start with the game. There would be way too much to try to analyse. The most important thing for me is that we always believed in ourselves and created chances, even after going behind. We never gave up and we always tried to find a way through them when on the ball. The equaliser just before full time was deserved and so was the winner in extra time.” Sandro Schwarz: “It was a real cup battle. We had a good first half, but we didn’t score enough goals. From the 60th minute onwards, we had a lot of defending to do because Augsburg started to put us under pressure on the wings. I’m annoyed that we conceded just before full time and the most annoying thing is that, despite such an effort, we’re out of the cup.”
