Baum: “Wary of their individual quality”
Away to VfL Wolfsburg
The task on matchday 23 of this Bundesliga season sees FC Augsburg travel up to VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, 21st February, for a 15:30 CET kick-off. FCA will want to keep up their positive form and hopefully pick up another three points to make it four wins in their last five games.
“We’re properly fired up for the game in Wolfsburg and we want to build on a solid record as of late,” said head coach Manuel Baum. His side’s 1-0 home win over 1. FC Heidenheim made it nine points from a possible twelve for Augsburg, who now sit eleventh in the league table. Only once across the last decade have FCA been better off position-wise at this stage of the season. Wolfsburg currently occupy 15th place in the standings, one point above the relegation play-off spot, with their most recent result a 2-2 draw away to RB Leipzig.
“Wolfsburg are packed with individual quality, you can see that in their market value of almost €250 million. You get the feeling they’ve somewhat lost their way in the table at the moment,” said Baum about the upcoming opponents. “We’re certainly wary of them, and we’ll aim to work together to get at them.” FCA won the reverse fixture 3-1 and now want to follow up that victory away from home. Overall, Baum added, his team are still working through a “process”.
New signing Ogundu “very well integrated”
Baum will still have to do without either captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw or Chrislain Matsima. The coach spoke positively about the development of new signing Uchenna Ogundu, who has settled in quickly: “He’s already had a few German lessons, greets me with ‘Servus’ and is very well integrated. You can see his strength and his pace in training. But we have to wait for the right moments to use young players like him.”
Dimitris Giannoulis is also back in full training following his return against 1. FC Heidenheim and is an option for the starting XI.
