Baum: "A real knockout blow at the start"
Match reaction to the 4-3 defeat in Elversberg
FC Augsburg fought hard to overturn a 3-0 deficit, but ultimately fell to a 4-3 defeat against SV Elversberg on matchday 6 of the Bundesliga. Read on for all the post-match reaction from both camps.
Robin Fellhauer: "We got off to a poor start and ruined the game for ourselves – we can't allow something like that to happen. Conceding early on knocked us off our game and the decisions from the VAR only added to the chaotic nature of the game. We were able to fight our way back, but we just weren't clinical enough in the end. The reception I got from the fans made me emotional, although I had obviously hoped for a different result at the end."
Fabian Rieder: "We only have ourselves to blame, because we weren't alert enough at the start. Conceding twice in quick succession put us on the back-foot straight away and going 3-0 down only made it more difficult. Nevertheless, we kept trying and didn't give up. Scoring shortly before the break reignited our hopes of a comeback. Overall, it was a chaotic game with plenty of chances and several difficult decisions for the referee. In the end, our performance simply wasn't good enough."
Manuel Baum (FC Augsburg head coach): "Congratulations to Elversberg for a crazy victory. The first seven minutes were tough for us, with a real knockout blow at the start. If you start a game like that and find yourself 2-0 down early on, then that's obviously going to have an impact, and it's something we need to analyse. We were able to get a goal back before half-time and had several more chances in the moments that followed which would have allowed us to perhaps score more than three times. It's frustrating that we weren't able to perform the way we're capable of across several positions for the full 90 minutes. The majority of the responsibility for today's defeat rests on our shoulders, even if Elversberg did make the most of their chances. It obviously also wasn't easy to have a game like that where the officiating is consistently being corrected. Regardless, we have to first and foremost look at our own performance, rather than any other factors. We will analyse the game and draw the right lessons from it."
Vincent Wagner (SV Elversberg head coach): "It was an exciting match with plenty to offer. In my opinion, it was a lucky, but not undeserved, win for us. It obviously helped to go 2-0 up early on. We were also unlucky to have to make two substitutions before half-time already. Despite that, the team did a good job. Although we conceded three times, our defence put in a solid performance. Overall, it's a step in the right direction, although we need to become more clever in certain situations. Augsburg were incredibly dangerous from set pieces. I'm satisfied with the way the team fought today."
