Ruben Vargas, the final FCA player left at the World Cup, was knocked out 6-1 by Portugal in the round of 16 on Tuesday night.

Switzerland had qualified for the knockouts by finishing second in Group G. They came up against Portugal, who left superstar Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench. His replacement, Gonçalo Ramos of Benfica, enjoyed a fine evening and scored a hat-trick (17’, 51’, 67’). The other goals for Portugal came from 39-year-old Pepe (33’), Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro (55’) and Rafael Leão (92’).

Vargas, who brilliantly set up a goal in the 3-2 win over Serbia, was again named in the starting XI. He was replaced in the 66th minute by Noah Okafor. Switzerland’s goal was a header by Manuel Akanji.

After Carlos Gruezo (Ecuador) and Robert Gumny (Poland) were already out, Vargas was the final FCA player remaining in the tournament. This trio will be allowed some extra time off before they return to training with the club.
