FC Augsburg got the 2025/26 Bundesliga season off to a winning start, recording a 3-1 victory away at SC Freiburg.
Head coach Sandro Wagner made two changes to his starting line-up following last weekend’s 2-0 win against Hallescher FC in the DFB-Pokal. New signings Robin Fellhauer and Elias Saad both made their Bundesliga debuts for FCA.
Wagner’s side managed to get the match off to a good start, before SC Freiburg began to assume control of proceedings. Lucas Höler looked to have made it 1-0, but his goal was then ruled out after the VAR spotted that he was offside when receiving the ball (18’). The minutes that followed saw SC look to pose a threat from set pieces and long throw-ins in particular.
FCA then broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, as Dimitris Giannoulis took aim from outside the box and saw his effort deflected in. Wagner’s team then added a second just minutes later, as Chrislain Matsima headed in a corner from Mert Kömür (38’).
Marius Wolf then capped off a fantastic first half for FCA with a sensational solo goal. The full-back won possession inside the Augsburg half following a Freiburg corner and sprinted across nearly the entire pitch with the ball, before finishing tidily past Noah Atubolu to make it 3-0 (45+2’).
Freiburg get one back, FCA hold onto the lead
The second half saw Freiburg throw everything they had into attack. The VAR intervened again in the 58th minute after spotting a handball inside the box from Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. Referee Felix Zwayer pointed to the spot, as Vincenzo Grifo stepped up and coolly slotted home the penalty for SC.
Play became more intense in the moments that followed, with Zwayer handing out a total of ten yellow cards. FCA defended well and proved equal to everything that Freiburg were able to throw their way. Atubolu did well to parry Gouweleeuw’s first-time attempt in the 84th minute, with Matsima pulling off a last-ditch clearance down the other end (88’). Finn Dahmen then needed to push a header from Matthias Ginter away from danger as the final whistle approached (90’).
In the end, Augsburg were able to maintain their lead even throughout 11 minutes of injury time to celebrate their first away win of the Bundesliga season. Next week, the team will be back in action as they host FC Bayern München at the WWK ARENA on Saturday, 30th August (18:30 CEST).
