Weinzierl: "You simply cannot play that way in the Bundesliga"

Post-match reaction to the defeat in Mainz

First Team 22.10.2021, 23:53

FC Augsburg were soundly beaten 4-1 away at 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Friday evening. "You simply cannot play that way in the Bundesliga," said head coach Markus Weinzeril. Read on for all the post-match reaction.

Rafał Gikiewicz:
"In the opening minutes, it's like we weren't even out on the pitch. We were an appetizer for Mainz; they did whatever they wanted to us. We discussed this match the entire week and prepared well, but none of that was visible on the pitch. It's not a question of the formation or the coach - when you don't contest any challenges, then you cannot win any games. The coach could have subbed off all 11 players at half-time. We cannot continue on like this!"

Arne Maier: "We failed to find our way into the game and made mistakes at key moments. Based on our poor performance in the first half, we heard some choice words during the half-time talk. We tried, but didn't really manage to find a solution. Mainz deservedly won."

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: "Today was extremely poor. When you start the way we did and make too many individual mistakes, then you have no chance. When we scored to make it 3-1, it gave us a bit of hope, but that quickly disappeared after their fourth goal. We concede far too many goals and don't score enough ourselves. There are several areas we need to work on, but we need to remain positive and improve in the next games."

Markus Weinzierl: "The way the team performed was not acceptable and completely different to what we'd discussed leading up to the match. We played too high after we conceded, which allowed them far too much space. We also weren't compact enough. We weren't strong in the tackles, and winning just 40% of your challenges at half-time isn't enough in the Bundesliga. The second half was somewhat better, but that's irrelevant."

Bo Svensson: “Of course we’re over the moon with the win and the performance. In the first half we created a lot. After the break we lost our way a bit and it could have become interesting after we conceded. The fourth goal finished things off though.”
