Weinzierl: “Either team could’ve won it”

The match reaction to the draw against Frankfurt

First Team 16.01.2022, 18:53

FCA drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt in their first home game of 2022. “We initially made life difficult for ourselves, but then we showed a good reaction,” analysed head coach Markus Weinzierl. Here is the match reaction.

Ricardo Pepi: “It was a tough game today. I think that we played particularly well just before half time and fought hard. We just didn’t quite get that winning goal. We need to improve in the next few matches and work hard on our game, and that will take us to success.”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “Just like in Hoffenheim, we conceded another goal on the counter attack today, and we need to defend better in these situations as a team. We had our moments in the game, but we didn’t test the opposition goal enough. The pressure’s starting to rise now, it’s time we started picking up some points, but I’ve always said that we’ve got enough quality so that we’re not in the relegation fight come the end of the season.”

Michael Gregoritsch: “Overall, it’s a deserved draw, and a match which either side could’ve won. Unfortunately, Frankfurt took the lead with their first real chance, but then we got back into the game and were applying some serious pressure before the break. After we equalised, we should have been awarded what was a clear penalty in my opinion, and I’m not sure why the referee didn’t point to the spot. It was an intense game and we had to work hard, but they’re the basics of football, and unfortunately we weren’t able to score any more goals past that. Flo had a good chance right at the death to win it, but Frankfurt also had their share of chances on the counter attack.”

Markus Weinzierl: “Either team could’ve won it. We initially made life difficult for ourselves by giving Frankfurt an absolute gift, but then we showed a good reaction and scored a deserved equaliser. We should have got a penalty in the 45th minute in my opinion. After half time we got lucky on one or two occasions, but we also had a clear-cut chance through Florian Niederlechner at the end of the game. At the end of it all, we’ve just got to live with the point.”

Oliver Glasner: “I don’t know how to feel about the result. On the one hand I can live with it, on the other I regret the chances we missed to win it. But Augsburg also had some big, big chances. The game was fairly even to start with. We took our chance well to take the lead and then had a massive opportunity for a second. We then faded out a bit before half time and conceded the equaliser, but we hit back at Augsburg after the break and missed a few good chances. We had the game at our feet at the end and missed another chances, but we’ll take a point.”
