Schmidt: "This is an important sign for the league"

First Team 19.10.2019, 13:56

FC Augsburg scored in the first and the last minute against reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in their 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon. "We rewarded ourselves for the effort we put in," Martin Schmidt said, relieved after winning the point. Read the full post-match reactions below.

Rani Khedira: “We had a great start, a great finish, and a great keeper in the middle parts. Tomas had a lot of criticism during the week, but he shrugged it off and we know that he’s agreat goalkeeper. We did not show any fear, we wanted to be brave instead, and we knew that with a fox in the box like Alfred up front, we would have chances to score if we kept the game open.”

Alfred Finnbogason: “There has been a lot of well-deserved criticism of us in the past few weeks and it was clear to us that the only way we could respond was on the pitch. We kept the game open for a long time, we were on the defensive for most of the game but took our chances against Bayern and had a little bit of luck on our side. Of course it is very special for me to score a last-minute equaliser in front of our own fans.”

Marco Richter: “We did a lot of things well and had a put on a really good defensive display, so it’s a great feeling to score two goals against Bayern and reward our fans with the point. We announced that we would have to react to the last game and did so today, but we must not stop here. We hope that we can pick up a win soon.”

Martin Schmidt: “First of all, I hope that Niklas Süle gets better soon. We had a clear plan and wanted to show that we can work as a team. The criticism was justified. It was important that we make our own luck. For me, Tomas Koubek was Man of the Match. He has shown that he can be trustworthy. We ran eight or nine kilometres further than our opponents and in the end we were rewarded with a point. This is an important sign for the league.”

Niko Kovac: “We are naturally disappointed, but the worst thing for us is Niklas Süle’s injury, which overshadows much of the occasion. We missed too many chances, but had a good game and made our opponents work for it. We defended badly in the build-up before both of their goals.”
