October: A treat of three points on Halloween

Review of the year 2021, part ten

Club 01.01.2022, 10:00

As the new year comes in, FC Augsburg are taking a look back over the last 12 months. Next up in the review of the year: October.

A second away game in a row saw FCA travel to Borussia Dortmund. Andi Zeqiri equalised to make it 1-1 just before half time, but in the end the Fuggerstädter suffered a 2-1 defeat and returned home empty handed. A good memory of the game was Lasse Günther’s Bundesliga debut, the summer signing coming on in the closing stages.

Following the international break, Arminia Bielefeld came to the WWK ARENA. Reece Oxford gave FCA the lead with his first professional goal. After the break though, the team played too passively and conceded an equaliser late on. Not long after, FCA were on the road again, this time to 1. FSV Mainz, and suffered an evening to forget. The team was three goals down by the half hour mark, and ended up losing 4-1.

A big win against VfB

There was little time to worry about the loss in Mainz, as the second round of the DFB-Pokal took place the following midweek, FCA travelling to VfL Bochum. Markus Weinzierl’s side overcame a 2-0 deficit in just five second-half minutes to level the score, Reece Oxford scoring another header and Ruben Vargas netting the equaliser. Extra time saw no more goals, so the game went into FCA’s first penalty shootout for over 11 years. Unfortunately, the Fuggerstädter came away on the losing end of a 5-4 loss.

The end of a three-game week came on Halloween, with VfB Stuttgart the guests in Augsburg. Once again, FCA went behind, but this time the rest of the game was a different story. Oxford scored his third goal in four games to make it 1-1 at half time, before Jeffrey Gouweleeuw turned the game around and scored his first FCA goal in front of the home fans. In the closing stages Florian Niederlechner and Alfred Finnbogason – netting for the first time in 18 months – scored to make the game safe and secure a 4-1 home win, Markus Weinzierl’s 50th Bundesliga win as head coach of FCA.
