March: Crucial home win against Gladbach

Review of the year 2021, part three

Club 25.12.2021, 10:00

As the new year comes in, FC Augsburg are taking a look back over the last 12 months. Next up in the review of the year: March.

After the win in Mainz gave FCA some breathing room, the month of March began with a setback. At Hertha BSC, László Bénes put the Fuggerstädter ahead early on, before a second half goal levelled the game and a penalty right at the end gave the “Old Lady” a 2-1 win.

The following week, Borussia Mönchengladbach came to visit on a Friday night. FCA went into the break lucky that the scores were level at 0-0, but then came back out for the second half in ice-cold form. Ruben Vargas headed in Augsburg’s first set-piece goal of the season for the lead, before the Foals equalised. Marco Richter and André Hahn scored to regain the lead and finish Gladbach off to secure a 3-1 win.

This win was also then followed by a setback. A visit to SC Freiburg saw the home side run out 2-0 winners, and there were then two weeks of international break to analyse the defeat.

Meanwhile, the work on building the new academy boarding school continued. Along with providing lodgings for 20 young players, the new building at FCA’s youth academy will also be home to a cafeteria, further office space and dressing rooms.
