Herrlich: “We want to take confidence from this game”

Post-match reactions from the Gladbach win

First Team 12.03.2021, 23:50

A clinical second half saw FC Augsburg kick off matchday 25 by beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1. “We finally got a set-piece goal and scored the goals at the right time,” said a pleased Heiko Herrlich.

Rafał Gikiewicz: “A win on a Friday night gives you a great feeling for the weekend, although I have to admit we weren’t at the races in the first half. After a clear conversation at half time, we showed our mentality in the second half and were clinical in front of goal.”

Marco Richter: “We weren’t at our best in the first half and couldn’t have complained about being behind at the break. We spoke about our mistakes and started the second half well, got stuck into the tackles and deserved the three points due to our improved performance. This game will give us a lot of strength for the coming weeks. I joked before the game with André that we would assist each other tonight, so it’s so nice that it actually happened.”

Reece Oxford: “These are three really important points, which we’re really pleased about. We can forget about that first half, but we didn’t give up and came out stronger for the second half. The season isn’t over yet though, so we need to stay focused.”

Ruben Vargas: “We struggled a lot in the first half. I wanted to help the team when I came on and it’s great that I managed to do so by scoring from the corner. That gave the lads a real confidence boost. The last few weeks haven’t been easy, which makes today’s home win even more important.”

Marco Rose: “It’s another setback. We had a clear game plan and implemented it well; we were dominant and had a lot of chances, but we didn’t take them. We even missed a penalty. We managed to come back and equalise after Augsburg took the lead and I had the feeling that we could win the game. But then came the next setback. It’s a painful defeat because it was yet another decent performance.”

Heiko Herrlich: "We made a lot of mistakes in the first half, giving the ball away very cheaply, and that gave Gladbach around four of their six big chances. We changed things up at half time and grew into the game more. We grabbed the match by the scruff of the neck, scored our goals at the right time and then had the confidence to play some nice counterattacking football. I’m delighted that we were able to finally get a goal from a set piece. No one will be thinking that we’re already safe though. We don’t intend on stopping now and want to take this confidence into the next games.”
