July: FCA first teamers at the Olympics

Review of the year 2021, part seven

Club 29.12.2021, 10:00

As the new year comes in, FC Augsburg are taking a look back over the last 12 months. Next up in the review of the year: July.

Just before the first team started preparations for the new season, there was some reorganisation in the backroom staff of the club. Christoph Janker took over the newly-formed role of team manager, and rehabilitation coach Daniel Müller became manager of the medical department. Daniel Klein arrived at FCA as a new goalkeeper, with Benjamin Leneis moving on loan to 1. FC Magdeburg.

Felix Götze (1. FC Kaiserslautern) and Jozo Stanic (SV Wehen Wiesbaden) were also loaned out to the 3. Liga to earn minutes and gain match practice. Another new arrival came in the form of U21 European champion Niklas Dorsch, who joined the Fuggerstädter from KAA Gent. The team then went to Walchsee in Austria for a pre-season training camp, where they laid the foundations for the new season and the new signings got to know their new teammates better.

Vargas and Switzerland beaten by Spain

Two players who did not travel to Austria were Ruben Vargas and Tomáš Koubek, who were representing their countries at EURO 2020. Both Switzerland and the Czech Republic were knocked out in the quarter finals, Vargas’ side beaten on penalties by Spain (3-1), Koubek’s team losing narrowly to Denmark (2-1). Felix Uduokhai and Marco Richter were also not at Walchsee, as they were representing Germany at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. With some players pulling out, the hastily-created squad did not make it out of the group stage.

Meanwhile, the season was drawing ever closer. FCA won a friendly against Cagliari 3-1, with Daniel Caligiuri sadly missing out due to a positive corona test.

The U23s season kicked off in July, the Rosenaustadion playing host to FCA II’s game against FC Bayern München II. The first competitive game on the season saw the team play well for large portions in front of a several hundred-strong crowd, but come away with a 3-0 defeat against the side relegated from the 3. Liga last season.
