Herrlich: "We know to analyse this defeat"

Reaction after 2-0 defeat to RasenBallsport Leipzig

First Team 17.10.2020, 18:48

After a strong first half, FCA eventually fell to a 2-0 defeat to table-toppers RasenBallsport Leipzig. “We can be proud of our performance,” said head coach Heiko Herrlich. Read all the match reaction here.

Daniel Caligiuri: “We obviously aren’t happy with the result, but Leipzig have bags of quality and are really hard to defend against. It hurt to concede such a stupid goal just before half time, even though we defended well throughout the match. After that, you go into the half-time break with your heads down. We fought hard to prevent defeat, but Leipzig were just too good today.”

Mads Pedersen: “We made it really difficult for Leipzig – we barely gave up any chances in the first half, yet we still went 1-0 behind. We put in a good showing, with maybe just the final ball and that composure missing. Overall, there were definitely some positives that we can take with us. We will keep working to improve in the weeks to come.”

Felix Uduokhai: “Leipzig’s superior quality shone through in the end, you have to admit that. But we defended really well until we conceded the first goal, we were really compact. Leipzig are a top team, though, and they were just a cut above above us today. Now we have to recover well, because next week we are facing Leverkusen, another top side.”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “For me, the fact that we could  have gone top today was not a factor. We are FC Augsburg, and after four matches we have seven points. But that’s only a temporary thing, and what matters is where we end up after matchday 34.”

Heiko Herrlich: “We can be proud of our performance. Our aim was to keep our clean sheet intact for as long as possible. We wanted to defend well and break into the final third with quick build-up play. Leipzig have the best gegenpress in the Bundesliga and unfortunately we were unable to play our way out of it. We were unlucky that Tobias Strobl couldn’t make contact with his headed chance. It’s annoying that we conceded right before half-time. We wanted to put some more pressure on after that, but you obviously can’t plan for such an incredible goal. In the end, we had our own opportunities, but we know that we have to analyse this defeat.”

Julian Nagelsmann: “It was a tough match. The opposition defended well and didn’t give us any space. We took the lead just before the break, thank God. We did well in the first twenty minutes of the second half, but we also had a bit of luck to go 2-0 ahead. Augsburg piled the pressure on after that and we gave possession away too many times. Overall though, I think that it was a deserved victory and we are now looking forward to the Champions League game in midweek.”
