FC Augsburg fell to a 2-1 defeat against RB Leipzig on Friday evening. “The team fought hard and did their best to turn the game around,” said coach Heiko Herrlich. Here is the post-match reaction from the game.

Rafał Gikiewicz: “It’s a frustrating loss against a top opponent. Whether it was a penalty or not I’m not sure, but it was a bitter feeling to see it retaken. That only happens in one out of every ten penalties, but the rules are the rules. When we went a goal down, we lost our composure and then allowed them to double their lead before half time. But I thought we showed a lot of character after the break and played a lot better against a great team. Although we lost, it’s not all negative. We have a lot of quality and if we can show it like we did at the end of the game, then we’ll be able to win next time. The goal now is to play like we did in the second half and build on this performance in the match against Leverkusen.”

Daniel Caliguiri: “The defeat hurts a lot. We wanted to play in a different way and attack them early on. The conditions were far from perfect today but that’s not an excuse. We need to learn from these last few games and move forward. After a game like this one, heads naturally drop but we’ll move on and come back stronger.”

Heiko Herrlich: “It’s very annoying to have come away empty handed for the third time this season against Leipzig. They’re a top team as you could see again today, but we gave them a good game. The penalty we conceded was controversial for me because I didn’t see any clear contact and then when we’re 2-0 down, I felt that Haidara obstructed Suchý but I don’t know if that was enough for a foul. It was very tough for us when we went two goals down, but the team fought hard and did their best to turn the game around. We tried everything and rallied well in the second half. If we can do the same in the next few games, we will be successful.”

Julian Nagelsmann: “I’m pleased with the way that the team started the match. We were focused right from kick off and put them under a lot of pressure, but missed some good opportunities because Augsburg defended well. We were in control after the break as well but made it more tense by conceding the penalty. It’s a deserved victory overall though in my eyes.”
