Herrlich: "Some things are more important than football"

Reaction to the draw with Schalke

First Team 13.12.2020, 19:23

After going behind, FC Augsburg came back to take a point against FC Schalke 04. Both head coaches agreed, however, that the result wasn’t the most important thing today.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Mark Uth’s injury had a big impact on the game, I think you could see that for every player. After we took the lead, we let Schalke back into the game with an error, and then it was obviously really tough for us after going down to ten men. But we showed good character to keep making chances and then we deserved the equaliser at the end.”

Marco Richter: “The game had absolutely everything. Mark Uth’s injury was obviously an awful moment. I wish him all the best. After we took the lead, Schalke turned the game around. Then we had a man sent off, but got an equaliser with ten men. We showed that we’re a good team and I’m glad that I could help the side by making it 2-2. We need to go into the next game as we finished this one.”

Daniel Caligiuri: “We knew that Schalke would give everything in this game. We fought well and didn’t give them anything in the first half, but then we can’t give them control of the game so easily like we did after the break. We did fight back though with ten men, which says a lot about us. We’re a developing side, so we need to keep working a step at a time.”

Heiko Herrlich: “Obviously we’re pleased we got a point, as we fought hard for it with ten men. But on days like this, it reminds you that some things are more important than football. We hope Mark Uth has a speedy recovery. That’s why I ask for your understanding that I don’t want to go into analysing the game so soon after it’s finished. We’ll do that in the next few days. After the awful moment, we actually came to terms with the fact that the game wouldn’t carry on. But after the referee asked and Schalke said they wanted to carry on playing, the game resumed. Everyone could see that it was a difficult situation.”

Manuel Baum: “Considering what’s happened, Mark Uth is doing well. I’d like to thank all the staff who have helped treat him. Manuel Gräfe also did a really good job as referee; he asked us whether we wanted to continue the game. We wanted to do it for Mark and to get the three points. Obviously it’s frustrating that it didn’t work out. Nonetheless, considering the situation today, we performed well. We can take positives from the game; we can win over 90 minutes, we just need to hold on that little bit longer.”
