Herrlich: "Rewarded for our character!"

Gladbach match reaction

First Team 21.11.2020, 18:36

Ten-man FC Augsburg rescued a 1-1 draw late on against Borussia Mönchengladbach. "We were rewarded for the character showed, even with ten men," reflected a delighted Heiko Herrlich after the game. All the reaction from the draw in Gladbach below.

Daniel Caligiuri: "We deserve the point. We had a huge chance to score in the first minute and then went behind with Gladbach’s first chance. But we never back down, we saw a lot of the ball. We need to be more composed and clinical in the final third. I’m happy for the team that I equalised late on, especially because we never gave up with a man down. We can be happy with our eleven points from our opening games.”

Rani Khedira: "We had the big chance to go ahead from the start, but we didn’t convert. After Gladbach took the lead, we always believed we had a chance. I’m annoyed I didn’t take my chance. We’re so happy Cali scored late on. The fact we came back with ten men gives us a lot of strength for the coming weeks.”

Tobias Strobl: "We always believed we could get something from the game. Even after going behind, we played good football. Of course, it’s a bit lucky to score so late on, but we deserved it and are happy with the point."

Alfred Finnbogason: "We’re over-the-moon with the point. We wanted to show a reaction after the Hertha loss. It shows the character in this team that we can fight back like that. I had a chance early in the first half, but we also never stopped believing after they scored. You always have a chance at 1-0 and we took it today.”

Heiko Herrlich: "We showed sheer determination and were rewarded for our character after going down to ten men. We had a huge chance early on to go ahead through Alfred Finnbogason, but even after going behind we knew we always had it in us. At half-time we pointed out that Gladbach often concede in the final 15 minutes. We had the big Khedira chance and then finally we got our reward when Caligiuri scored. But you also have to acknowledge that we rode our luck in one or two situations."

Marco Rose: "A point is not enough for us. After Augsburg’s big chance at the start, we actually had the game under control. But we couldn’t find the second goal and then it was also going to get a bit nervy. Unfortunately, we conceded yet another late goal. That’s a painful learning process for us because we have dropped points again. But we need to live with that and keep working."
