February: Finnbogason’s snowy hat-trick

Club 25.12.2019, 11:48

The year 2019 is coming to an end - a good time to take a look at twelve exciting and emotional months full of ups and downs. Looking back at February: Relief, a debut and the fastest FCA goal in Bundesliga history.

After two defeats at the start of the season, the pressure before the home game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 is immense - but in the heavy snow, the team provides a strong answer to the latest results. Alfred Finnbogason sets the side on course for victory with two calm penalties before the break. In the second half, the forward puts the game to bed with his third goal. "You saw the character of the team," says coach Manuel Baum after the 3-0 victory. For Finnbogason, it is his fourth Bundesliga hat-trick.

Only three days later, the Fuggerstädter travel to Holstein Kiel in the DFB-Pokal. The team struggles against the second-division side, but shortly before full time, Michael Gregoritsch sends the FCA fans into raptures and Augsburg into the quarterfinals. There is not much time for joy, however, as the double gameweek comes to a bitter end. FCA lose 4-0 at SV Werder Bremen, with the hosts racing into a 3-0 lead after just half an hour. There is a little ray of hope, though: home-grown Jozo Stanić comes on as a substitute in the closing minutes and celebrates his Bundesliga debut.

Record goal against Bayern: FCA narrowly miss out on shock result

The following week, FC Bayern arrive at the WWK ARENA. The game couldn't start better for Augsburg: just twelve seconds were played when Leon Goretzka put the ball into his own goal - it is the fastest goal in the Bundesliga history of FCA. Although the record champions soon equalise, the renewed form of Dong-Won Ji makes fans dream of a surprise result. Ultimately, however, Bayern win 3-2, leaving FCA without points once more.

The team cannot maintain the level of the courageous performance against Bayern. At SC Freiburg, FCA have a bad game and lose 5-1. It is the third loss in a row. However, because the competition from Stuttgart, Hannover and Nuremberg are also struggling, FCA stay clear of the relegation zone.
