2020 will be remembered largely for the Coronavirus pandemic, but it was also a successful year for FCA, as the club ensured their top-flight status for the tenth consecutive season. We're taking a look back at everything that's happened over the last 12 eventful months, in our Year in Review. February saw FCA record an important win against Bremen, although it was followed by a run of three games without a win. 

After starting the year with two defeats, FCA were feeling the pressure ahead of their home game against SV Werder Bremen. A win would allow the visitors to draw within three points of FCA. Despite Werder taking the lead, FCA turned the game around after the break and went on to win 2-1 thanks to goals from Florian Niederlechner and Ruben Vargas. "That was a very, very important win," Niederlechner said, as FCA extended their lead over Bremen to nine points. 

But, it was quickly followed by a setback. FCA were able to hold off Eintracht Frankfurt for most of the first half, but two quick goals after the break and a further two in the closing minutes saw the Augsburgers head home empty-handed after a 5-0 thrashing. 

Strong performance, but no reward against Gladbach

FCA were then able to pick up an important point against SC Freiburg. Philipp Max had put his side ahead with his seventh goal of the season, but it wasn't to be for FCA that day, as the match ended in a deserved 1-1 draw. The result meant that FCA remained unbeaten at home in the Bundesliga against Freiburg. The following week saw FCA extend another (unwanted) streak in the top flight. A 2-0 loss to Leverkusen means the Fuggestädter still haven't won any of their 18 top-flight games against the Werkself. 

FCA welcomed another top team the following matchday, with Borussia Mönchengladbach coming to town. The match really took off in the second half, as goals from Eduard Löwen (his first competitive goal for the club) and Alfred Finnbogason saw FCA fight back twice, before ultimately falling to a 3-2 defeat against the Foals - their first Bundesliga win in Augsburg. While Niederlechner described the defeat as "feeling horrible," head coach Martin Schmidt was pleased with the moral his side showed, saying "We didn't give up and did our best to prevent the defeat."
