FCA turn their attentions to the unbeaten Wolves

First Team 25.10.2019, 14:10

The excitement in Augsburg was huge after the 2-2 draw with FC Bayern Munich, but the focus now switches to the upcoming away game against second placed VfL Wolfsburg. Martin Schmidt’s side will be looking to get their first away win against the Wolves on Sunday 27th October (15:30 CET).

“The Bayern game was obviously great from our point of view, the excitement after was huge. The reality is though, that a point isn’t enough. But it has given us a good feeling that we’re going to carry with us against every opponent from now on,” said the head coach. It’s clear however, that the team has to replicate this performance “week after week”.

The defence has a new-found confidence

FCA will go to Wolfsburg on Sunday, yet another opponent with a strong attacking line, where it will be important for them to have the right mentality and conviction in the tackle. “Wolfsburg have really done well under new coach Oliver Glasner, and they’re showing it out on the pitch,” said Schmidt on the upcoming opponent, for whom he worked over a five month period in 2017/18. Wolfsburg are as yet unbeaten in all competitions this season.

FCA defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw pointed out that this stat can give the team a real sense of motivation going in to the game. He stated that it is more important, however, that the team “focus on their own game” and “work for each other”, as Schmidt often tells them to. It’s not just Gouweleeuw who’ll be “fit and ready” after his comeback to the squad, but also Daniel Baier is back in full training. This means that the likely possibility of Reece Oxford withdrawing from the squad can be compensated for, should he not be available for this Sunday’s game. Schmidt therefore has options at his disposal to help him bring three points home from Wolfsburg.
