FCA beaten 2-0 in Frankfurt despite brave performance

First Team 20.04.2021, 22:27

FC Augsburg were beaten 2-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday evening. The visitors put on a solid performance away from home, but couldn’t reward their efforts.

Heiko Herrlich made eight changes to the team, just three days on from the 0-0 draw against Arminia Bielefeld. Rafał Gikiewicz, Felix Uduokhai and Marco Richter were the only players to remain in the starting XI. Rani Khedira and Daniel Caligiuri both missed out due to suspension (five yellow cards), while Jeffrey Gouweleeuw made it into the squad after being subbed off with a knock last matchday.

Eintracht took control of the affair from the first whistle; André Silva was the first to have a crack at the Augsburg goal (5'). FCA let the hosts attack in the early stages, but after ten minutes began to grow in the game and move the ball further up the pitch. Marco Richter (10') and László Bénes (11') were both kept out by Kevin Trapp in quick succession. While Frankfurt continued to dominate possession, they struggled to find a way through the organised Augsburg back line. At the other end, Herrlich’s men failed to make the most of their counter attempts.

Former FCA defender was lucky to escape with just a yellow card on the half hour mark after swiping Richter on the half-way line. Hinteregger was the focal point of the action again soon after when he headed past Gikiewicz from a Daichi Kamada cross to give the hosts the lead (37’).

Silva doubles – Finnbogason misses penalty

The second half began in similar fashion to the first. Frankfurt continued to press their way forward, as FCA sat back and let them attack. But this time the hosts took advantage of their first chance in clinical fashion; Filip Kostic crossed towards the far post, where Silva was waited to nod a free header in for 2-0 (58’).

Herrlich reacted quickly, introducing Tobias Strobl, Fredrik Jensen and Alfred Finnbogason into the match (65'). The Iceland forward had a golden opportunity to bring Augsburg back into the game from the penalty spot after Tuta was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, but his spot kick flew over the crossbar (73').

A late flurry of chances from substitute Ruben Vargas was too little too late to overturn the defeat, but overall it was a worthy performance from FCA.
FCA are back in action as early as Friday (23rd April, 20:30 CEST) when they host 1. FC Köln.
