FCA beaten by FC Villarreal

First Team 27.07.2019, 12:29
FC Augsburg were forced to admit defeat in the second friendly of their Austrian training camp, losing 6-2 against FC Villarreal. FCA head coach Martin Schmidt changed his starting line-up in nine positions after winning 4-1 against Galatasaray on Thursday evening: Only Carlos Gruezo and André Hahn kept their places in the starting XI. Fabian Giefer replaced Andreas Luthe between the sticks. Both teams made a slow start. FC Villarreal’s Carlos Bacca managed the first effort on goal, but failed to trouble Fabian Giefer with a shot from 20 meters (6’). The Spaniards were the more active team, especially in attack, and finally took the lead through Daniel Raba. After a cross from the left, the Spaniard headed in to make it 1-0 (11’).  But that was not all: Only four minutes later, the Spaniards, donning yellow garb, scored again to make it 2-0. Vicente Iborra timed his run to perfection after a long ball and lashed the ball past Giefer into the Augsburg goal. FCA had more trouble in the 23rd minute. After a ball over the top to Daniel Raba, Giefer was beaten by a curved shot to make it 3-0 to the Spaniards. With heavy legs, FCA could not find a way back into the game - two training sessions a day and a friendly against Galatasaray the day before had left their mark on the team. However, FCA still got one back before the break, as left-back Philipp Max scored a wonder goal from an acute angle to make it 1-3 (33’). Little changed after the break, with Villarreal’s defence holding off all of Augsburg’s attacks. FCA, on the other hand, were unable to hold the Spaniards off.  Alberto Moreno scored to make it 4-1 (60’), and three minutes later Carlos Bacca had the ball in the Augsburg net once again. Similar to the day before, Martin Schmidt made plenty of substitutions against Villarreal to allow as many players as possible to play. But even with fresh legs, FCA were unable to match the Spanish side’s unrivalled energy. FCA goalkeeper Fabian Giefer was once again in the spotlight in the final quarter of an hour, first parrying two solo runs by Jaume Costa (76’), but unable to keep out youngster Fernando Niño’s shot just two minutes later (78’). Maurice Malone got the game’s final game, however. After the FCA junior player was hauled to the ground in the penalty area, he stepped up to make it 2-6 (88’). FCA sustained their first defeat in their fifth pre-season friendly. On Saturday, August 3rd, (15:30 CEST), Augsburg welcome Italian first division team FC Bologna in the WWK ARENA for a dress rehearsal ahead of the start of the competitive season, as a part of the family celebration day. Season ticket holders will receive free admission to the match.
