FCA BEAT FRANKFURT 2-1 TO CLAIM FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

FC Augsburg have managed to pick up their first win in the fourth Bundesliga game of the season. FCA were 2-0 up already by the end of the first half and, despite conceding in the second, managed to hold on to their advantage until the end of the match. FCA head coach Martin Schmidt made three changes from the 3-2 loss to Werder Bremen before the international break. Raphael Framberger made his return to the side after a long injury layoff caused by a torn ACL, and Jan Morávek also got the nod. In the attack, Alfred Finnbogason started for the first time this season. Stephan Lichtsteiner was suspended following a red card against Werder, while captain Daniel Baier was out with a calf injury and Michael Gregoritsch dropped to the bench. Barely a minute had gone by before the FCA fans thought their team had taken the lead. After good link-up play from Marco Richter and Ruben Vargas, Florian Niederlechner had a shot parried away by Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp. Apart from this early spell, Frankfurt grew into the game, and their sustained early dominance left Augsburg having to rely on counter-attacks. Acrobatic Richter, fantastic Niederlechner This tactic seemed to work, as FCA managed to hold Frankfurt for long periods of the first half. However, Eintracht had a few chances that posed genuine threats to the Augsburg goal. A shot from Goncalo Paciencia hit the post (14’) and Koubek pushed a bouncing effort from Daichi Kamada around the post (27’). As the game went on, however, Augsburg started to venture forward with increasing effectiveness and fashioned some good chances of their own. After a blocked shot came free in the area, Finnbogason attempted to score past the stranded Trapp but ex-Augsburg player Martin Hinteregger was on hand to make a goal-line clearance (33’). Shortly after, the ball finally nestled in the Frankfurt net. After a cross from Rani Khedira, Finnbogason arced a header into the path of Richter, who performed an acrobatic volley to make it 1-0 to Augsburg (36’). Incidentally, Richter has now scored four of his six total Bundesliga goals against Frankfurt. Things got even better for FCA just before the break, when Niederlechner scored to make it 2-0. The forward cut inside just on the edge of the box and curled a wonder goal into the top corner (43’). Paciencia makes it tense After the break, the dynamics shifted again and it was Frankfurt who sought to restore parity in the game by applying much more pressure. With Augsburg controlling the space well and winning the decisive tackles, the guests were limited to a tame Andre Silva effort (46’). Augsburg placed much less emphasis on attack with their 2-0 lead, so chances were at a premium in the second half. The Frankfurt goal then was therefore somewhat surprising. Ex-Augsburg player Dominik Kohr pushed through the midfield and supplied Paciencia. The Portuguese forward jinked into the area and unleashed a powerful daisy-cutter into the Augsburg net to reduce the deficit and make it 2-1 (73’). In the final few minutes, Frankfurt threw everything at Augsburg to try and find an equaliser, but the hosts managed to hold out through a combination of luck and passion. Augsburg’s next match is away at SC Freiburg on Saturday, 21st September (15:30 CEST).
