2-2 draw against HSV in first pre-season friendly

Danso and Hahn score for FCA

First Team 07.07.2021, 15:25

FC Augsburg’s first friendly ahead of the 2021/22 season ended in a 2-2 draw against Hamburger SV on Wednesday. All four goals came inside a crazy seven minutes in the first half.

Markus Weinzierl was without Tomáš Koubek, Fredrik Jensen, Ruben Vargas and Michael Gregoritsch, who all took part in EURO 2020, as well as Carlos Gruezo und Sergio Córdova, who were involved in Copa América. The starting XI included Kevin Danso, who spent last season on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf.
The match was played at a high intensity and tempo from the beginning, with both sides looking to press high and attack. HSV had the first chance after eight minutes as they took control. Sebastian Schonlau headed just wide from a corner. At the other end, Marco Richter had FCA’s first sight of goal, shooting wide from distance (12’).

Four goals in seven minutes

Weinzierl’s side took the lead in the 19th minute. Daniel Caligiuri’s free-kick was blocked, which then fell to Richter. His shot ended up at Danso’s feet and he converted inside the box. This was the start of a crazy period in Heimstetten. Florian Niederlechner was denied by HSV goalkeeper Tom Mickel (22’), before the 2. Bundesliga team levelled proceedings. Manuel Wintzheimer cut inside and found the back of the net (23’). A minute later, however, FCA regained the lead. Hahn was played in nicely by Caligiuri and he made it 2-1 (24’). Hamburg battled back immediately, Wintzheimer again the goalscorer. This time, he beat Rafał Gikiewicz with a chip (26’).

After this wild period, the first half calmed down. Richter’s free-kick was saved by Mickel (40’), while Danso stopped a HSV attack with a last-ditch challenge (42’).

Uduokhai hits the bar – Richter misses a chance for 3-2

Weinzierl made six changes for the second period, including bringing on Frederik Winther, who made his first appearance in an FCA shirt. The first opportunity after the break came for Augsburg. Felix Uduokhai headed a Richter corner onto the bar (50’).

The second half was an even one, with few chances and most of the play outside of the two boxes. Alfred Finnbogason narrowly missed the HSV goal (61’), whilst Robin Meißner couldn’t beat Gikiewicz (69’). Richter had the best chance to find a third goal. He was through after a well-worked counter, but cleared the bar with his strike (71’). The final moment of note saw Jeffrey Gouweleeuw test out HSV’s sub keeper Leo Oppermann with a long-range effort (88’).

FCA’s next two friendlies are during their training camp against Qarabag FK (Thursday, 15th July at 18:00 CEST) and FC Ingolstadt (Friday, 16th July at 15:30 CEST).
