3-0 in Freiburg: FCA suffer convincing defeat

First defeat away from home this season

First Team 26.09.2021, 19:21

In their third away game of the season, FC Augsburg sustained their first defeat. The Fuggerstädter lost 3-0 at SC Freiburg.

Head coach Markus Weinzierl made two changes to the team that beat Borussia Mönchengladbach last time out. Mads Pedersen replaced Iago (shoulder) and Florian Niederlechner started after scoring the winning goal against the Foals, coming in for Andi Zeqiri.

In their last game at the Dreisamstadion, Freiburg were looking to get forward from the get-go. Nicolas Höfler forced Rafał Gikiewicz into an early save (3’), before SCF made the break-through a few minutes later. Gikiewicz did well again after a shot from Christian Günter, but could do nothing about Lukas Kübler’s subsequent shot (6’).

Höler makes it 2-0 – Grifo converts from the spot

FCA had their first scoring chance through Daniel Caligiuri (9’), but Freiburg remained the team in charge. Höler volleyed wide (14’) and Vincenzo Grifo’s shot flew just over the bar (18’). Augsburg predominantly looked to counter, but rarely threatened the opposition goal. Midway through the first half, the home side doubled their lead. Maximilian Eggestein found Höler in the box, and he let the ball run before dinking it over the FCA goalkeeper and into the net (25’).

Things didn’t get any better for the visitors as just a few minutes later, referee Daniel Schlager pointed to the spot. Raphael Framberger was penalised as the ball struck his arm from close range. Grifo stepped up and fired high into the left corner to make it 3-0 (33’). Gikiewicz was called into action again before the break, saving against Höfler and preventing a fourth goal. At the other end, Niederlechner shot from a tight angle was saved by Mark Flekken (45').

Jeong narrowly misses – Pedersen denies Grifo

Markus Weinzierl reacted at the break by making two changes for the second half, Carlos Gruezo and Andi Zeqiri replacing Raphael Framberger and André Hahn. This saw FCA switch from a more defensive back three to a back four. Despite slightly improving, Augsburg rarely came close to scoring. The brightest moment was a long-range shot by Caligiuri (46’).

The hosts came almost added further goals in a dangerous couple of minutes for FCA. Firstly, Woo-Yeong Jeong narrowly missed the far corner from a central position (64’), then Pedersen did brilliantly to block Grifo’s shot on the line (65’). Aside from that, not much happened in the closing stages. The final chance of the game was for Ermedin Demirovic, who was kept out by Gikiewicz from a tight angle (78’).

Ultimately, the Fuggerstädter ended up losing 3-0. Their next game is again away from home, this time at Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, 2nd October (15:30 CEST).
