October: Last-minute equaliser against Bayern

Club 01.01.2020, 11:47

The year 2019 is coming to an end - a good time to take a look at twelve exciting and emotional months full of ups and downs. Looking back at October: two big losses, an incredibly fast goal, and a spectacular draw against the champions.

October started with a comprehensive defeat. FCA lost 5-1 at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The game was essentially decided when the home side went 3-0 down in the 13th minute. However, the subsequent international break may have been just what the Augsburg players needed to clear their heads. FCA woa friendly game at SC Austria Lustenau - whose supporters have a long-standing fan friendship with those of the FCA 4-0.

After the international break FCA hosted Bayern Munich at the WWK-ARENA.  The game couldn’t possibly have started better for Augsburg, as after only 27 seconds Marco Richter gave the home side the lead. It was the fastest goal scored by an Augsburg player in the Bundesliga history. After the break, Bayern turned the game around but were just denied the win in added time when substitute FCA Alfred Finnbogason made the score 2-2 and sent the home fans into raptures.

FCA keep a clean sheet for the first time in Wolfsburg

After a draw that felt like a win against the reigning champions and after two successive losses head coach Martin Schmidt said after the match, “That sent an important sign to the league.”   .

The team took the momentum from the late equaliser against Bayern into the next away game. Against the at that time still undefeated VfL Wolfsburg, FCA played out a 0-0 draw thanks to a concentrated defensive performance, and for the first time the newly-formed defence kept a clean sheet. Despite forcing a draw against the second-placed side in the Bundesliga, FCA’s direct rivals in the league fared better, and left Augsburg in the relegation zone.
