0-0 against Union: FCA get another point on their travels

Numerous chances but the game ends goalless

First Team 11.09.2021, 17:30

FC Augsburg earned another point in their second away fixture of the season. The game against 1. FC Union Berlin ended 0-0, but both teams had numerous good chances. Both keepers were called into action on a number of occasions but neither side had the cutting-edge to score.

Markus Weinzierl made two changes to the side that lost 4-1 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen before the international break. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Raphael Framberger started in place of the injured Felix Uduokhai and Carlos Gruezo, who returned early from international duty.

Just as they did away at Frankfurt (0-0), FCA lined up with three in defence which turned into a five when defending. The two wide players Framberger and Iago were involved right from the off, as both teams looked to get forward from the start. Union were close to taking the lead twice in the early stages of the game. Rafał Gikiewicz had to save first from Niko Gießelmann (9’), then shortly after managed to tip the Berliner’s volley onto the post at full stretch (11’).

At the other end FCA looked dangerous, and they came close when André Hahn’s shot deflected off Florian Niederlechner (16’). Shortly after, a header from Gießelmann flew over the crossbar (20’). After a short lull in the game, things picked up again after the half-hour mark, mainly due to an increase in pressure from Augsburg. Iago forced Andreas Luthe into a save with a chip (31’), before the former FCA goalkeeper was also in the right position to frustrate Reece Oxford (32’).

Friedrich and Voglsammer hit the woodwork

The Fuggerstädter made the better start to the second half, with Niederlechner putting a header from a promising position just off-target (47’). Meanwhile, Gikiewicz was able to keep out an attempt by Gießelmann (56’). A little later, however, the Augsburg keeper had to stand and watch as Marvin Friedrich fired goalwards from short distance. Luckily he could only thunder the ball against the bar (65’).

Weinzierl had brought on two sets of fresh legs shortly before in the form of Andi Zequiri and Sergio Córdova. The Venezuelan could have given FCA the lead with his first involvement, but failed to beat Luthe from close range (66’). Union piled on the pressure at the end of the game, but Taiwo Awoniyi and Andreas Voglsammer met their match in Gikiewicz (74’), before Voglsammer had another shot, this time hitting the post with his effort (80’). FCA also had the chance to win the game, but Zequiri missed the chance to mark his debut with a goal on the counter (83’).

The match ended goalless though both sides had their chances. It’s another point on the road for Augsburg in their second away trip of the season. They host Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, 18th September at 15:30 CEST.
