Herrlich: "We're hungry for more points"

First Team 16.06.2020, 15:03

After their 1-0 victory over Mainz, Augsburg can now clinch safety with a win on Wednesday over TSG Hoffenheim. Coach Heiko Herrlich wants to get as many points as possible from their last three games and is really looking forward to the clash with the Kraichgauer.

Thanks to the win in Mainz, Augsburg extended the gap to the relegation zone to seven points. The team will now secure their safety in the league if they can get a win against Hoffenheim on Wednesday evening. 'We want to get as many points as we can out of the last three games," said Heiko Herrlich. "We have to get off to a good start in Hoffenheim."

Hoffenheim also have plenty to play for in these final few games. They currently sit in 7th place, 3 points behind VfL Wolfsburg in sixth, looking to secure their spot in the European places for next season. But with Freiburg just a point behind them, the spot could be snatched from them, and so they also need the win.

Herrlich on Hoffenheim: "A truly difficult opponent"

Dropping points is therefore not an option for the Kraichgauer either. The team parted ways with their coach Alfred Schreuder last week which came as a surprise to many around the league. In their first game with Schreuder, they lost 2-0 at home to RB Leipzig, but that hasn't lulled Heiko Herrlich into any false sense of security. "They played really well last weekend and were the better team in my opinion," analysed the Augsburg head coach.  "They play with a high intensity, they're aggressive and they like to get on the front foot early."

Hoffenheim have won the last four games between the pair in Sinsheim, and Herrlich is expecting "a truly difficult opponent" on Wednesday. Herrlich also sees the game as "on opportunity to see how far we've come as a team and how we fare against teams of this quality."

Three games in seven days: Herrlich on squad rotation

Whilst TSG played Leipzig on Friday, Augsburg played Mainz on Sunday, meaning that they will now play three games in seven days. Given this amount of games in such a short amount of time, a bit of rotation will be needed for Herrlich's men. Captain Daniel Baier will return to the squad after a period out with injury.

No matter who plays on Wednesday, the aim will stay the same: After five home games without a win, to finally get back to winning ways - so that they can once again get back to playing in the Bundesliga for the tenth consecutive year. "We're hungry for more points," said Herrlich. The coach doesn't want to look too far ahead to Düsseldorf: "We're only concentrating on us, not on other teams," said Herrlich. "Looking at everyone else isn't necessary."
