Gruezo: “We will give our all at all times”

First Team 05.03.2020, 10:55

After being sidelined by injury for several months, Carlos Gruezo made his comeback in last weekend’s 3-2 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach. In an interview, the midfielder speaks about his comeback and looks ahead to Sunday’s tough challenge against FC Bayern München (8th March, 15:30 CET).

It’s been nearly half a year since Carlos Gruezo’s last Bundesliga appearance. The Ecuadorian last featured for FCA in a 1-1 draw against Union Berlin at the end of August. In the months that followed, Gruezo was sidelined by a nagging ankle injury. “It was a difficult time for me and my family,” he said. “I spent a lot of time at home and at physio.”

After being included in each of the five previous matchday squads, Gruezo was finally able to start a match again, lining up beside Rani Khedira against Gladbach. “I was happy,” said the midfielder about his comeback. “I was out injured for a while, and hadn’t been back on the pitch for six months. Thankfully, I’m fully fit once again and can train and play with the team again.”

Gruezo: “Anything can happen in the Bundesliga”

Despite a back-and-forth second half against Gladbach, it was Augsburg who had to accept defeat in the end. “That was too bad, after all, we could have won,” said Gruezo. “We played well. We made a few mistakes, but that’s bound to happen in football.” According to the 24-year-old, he is still not at 100 per cent following his lengthy injured spell. “That was the first time I started a match since my injury. I need to find my rhythm again and still need a bit of time,” he said.

Gruezo will likely have the opportunity to pick up more playing time this weekend, as the Fuggestädter travel to Munich. “It will not be easy. Bayern are a good team with good players, and have a lot of quality,” Gruezo said. “But, anything can happen in the Bundesliga and we also have the quality needed within our team. We need to pick up points and will give it our all at all times.”
